On the face of it, the weakness of the pound is acting against British buyers wishing to secure property in the eurozone owing to the weak pound. But canny buyers are able to turn the current situation to their advantage to secure property investments at extraordinarily good prices.
How?
Find British vendors wishing to repatriate the proceeds back to the UK. This way the issue with exchange rates is somewhat negated – it is the pound equivalent that is of greatest interest to them. They will accept less as long as the euro is strong against the pound.
Get a flexible mortgage, denominated in euros, with no early redemption fee (we have just such a mortgage provider up our sleeve).
Pay off the mortgage in full when the exchange rate is more in your favour – experts predict that the pound will strengthen against the euro towards the end of 2009. It is reasonable to assume that the current exchange rate is exception and will return to more normal levels at some time in the medium term.
